The most popular cinematographic genre is detective: showing crimes, their investigation and identification of the guilty. Varieties of this genre are action, or action, western, gangster film, martial arts film and some thrillers.

However, the worldwide fame of the cinematography of the Soviet period of the 20s of the 20th century was undoubtedly associated with the names of its classics - S. M. Eisenstein (1898–1948), V. I. Ford (1895-1974) "The Grapes of Wrath", "Young Mr. Lincoln", W. Wyler (1902-1981) "The Dead Corner", "The Foxes", O. Wells (1915-1985) " Citizen Kane", which admired for its innovation in the field of drama, in the system of expressive means, stunned with its psychological depth and social significance, commercial genres are becoming widespread: gangster films, horror films, melodramas, musicals, westerns, etc. So, American cinema of the 1930s performed a certain compensatory function, distracting the viewer from life's problems.

Another vivid example is the film festival "Open Night", which for the 24th year in a row opens new Ukrainian names in the field of cinematography and television production. "We. For us. About myself" is the motto of the festival, which carries fundamental for today theses regarding Ukrainian-language cinema.
